Eucalyptus vs. Bamboo

Eucalyptus vs. Bamboo - What's Best for You and the Environment?

For the foreseeable future, the products we consume will be constantly evolving into more efficient, cleaner and safer versions of the items we have grown to use and love.

Common household objects such as cleaners, appliances, furniture and decor will change for the better as a result of the demand for healthy and quality lifestyles.

Here, we’ll break down two materials used in the textile industry that are growing in popularity because of their ability to enrich the quality of life for you, your family and the planet.

Sustainably Sourced Products

We’re now well into 2020, and we no longer shop with just ourselves in mind. The environment is one of the core deciding factors for shoppers today with 64% of households preferring to buy sustainable products

Luckily for us, many brands are listening to consumers and now focus manufacturing on providing products that are safe for the environment and consumers alike.

Eucalyptus trees–unlike traditionally used materials such as cotton, hemp and flax–take approximately three to four years to regenerate and require fewer resources for growth.

This is a short amount of time considering many forests take decades or even hundreds of years to regenerate.

Additionally, eucalyptus promotes a biodiverse ecosystem by reducing the risk of forest fire and is easy to convert into usable goods like clothing and mattress pads.

Bamboo, another trending eco-friendly material for manufacturers, is a grass that can easily be a sustainable crop.

The plant grows rapidly, requiring no fertilizer and self-regenerates from its own roots.

However, in order for bamboo to transform into the silk-like fabric it’s known to be in the form of bedding and clothing, it involves a highly intensive chemical process requiring a large amount of resources like water and fossil fuels.

Safe and Clean Materials

In a saturated market where it seems like choosing the right product for you is about as easy as deciding where your family should order take-out, shopping might be the last thing you want to do in your spare time.

Once you familiarize yourself with the ingredients, materials and origins of many products, your search for the best narrows down.

We don’t have to sacrifice comfort to ensure that the fabrics that touch our skin are the safest and cleanest.

If you have sensitive skin, you’re in luck because eucalyptus is a naturally hypoallergenic material.

Eucalyptus fibers used in One’s Own mattress protectors are custom made from sustainably sourced eucalyptus that is knitted rather than woven to create a softer, less irritating fabric.

Eucalyptus fiber is moisture wicking and keeps liquids away from your mattress while inhibiting the growth of mold and bacteria.

Even better, eucalyptus fiber is micro-porous, preventing dust, lint and dead skin cells from getting through to your mattress and eliminating the food sources for dust mites.

Have trouble sleeping? Eucalyptus is cool to the touch, which creates an ideal sleeping environment when used in bedding.

Bamboo is also a naturally hypoallergenic plant and is even antibacterial in its purest form. However, during the process in which bamboo fiber is created, “bamboo fiber has no natural antibacterial ability.”

In the future, bamboo could prove to be both antibacterial and hypoallergenic if extraction methods could improve bamboo fibers’ ability to fight bacteria.

The process to create bamboo–or “Lyocell” as it’s commonly referred to within the textile industry–involves more chemicals than eucalyptus alternatives.
